Cold weather bites southern australia

In the northern part of Australia, heavy rain, the coldest in a century, has battered parts of the south and east of the country.

This could make the north and east of Australia particularly vulnerable to flooding in the coming months, with some communities reporting up to 20 per cent of their homes inundated by rain alone, according to figures released today by the Bureau of Meteorology.

That could mean up to 200 deaths each year.

The bureau issued the estimates as part of a comprehensive analysis of severe weather that was done in May.

The analysis showed that it is expected to become more severe than normal in Southern Australia from early June. The main flood risk areas will be in Western Australia and the South Australian coast.
