Canberra woman sentenced over smacking woman
Posted
A female New South Wales court has sentenced a woman to six months in jail for slapping a man in an elevator.
The Sydney courtroom witnessed the incident, which happened in September 2014, as court in Adelaide heard the woman's lawyer was not prepared for the case to go to court.
Police and the courts were in no position to intervene, she said at the time.
At the time, the woman was known to be an advocate and was on disability protection payments.
After a short jail term the woman pleaded guilty to one of the offences and was given a conditional discharge, ordered to attend counselling and work with a disability service provider.
On Monday, in a statement, she said she would not apologise for using her right in court to seek justice and would continue fighting to have her case heard in court.
"This incident is just one example of how the Australian criminal justice system fails to protect victims of crime," she said.
"[It] is an example of how in the courtroom and the streets I am sometimes accused of using intimidation to get my way.
"To all those people who supported me and supported me through it all I would like to thank you very much."
